General
Power Options in Control Panel can be set so that the computer goes into Hybernation Mode when the lid is shut. My tablet is set this way with no problem. Many students leave classrooms with tablets open because they are waiting for the Hybernation process to be completed. This makes them vulnerable. (Use sleep instead- Fn F4 it's quicker)

The updated version for the SmartBoard, the ibooks still have 8.5. Update for tablet too, please.

Mavis Beacon or some other typing program
Dreamweaver

Many schools have Mavis Beacon allready and with the wireless it will not work on a server version (which is the only real way to check student progress) .

Browser
Please lose the instant messenger capability on the browser.
Please build in 20 days of history in the Internet Explorer tools. Now the default is "0" days.
The broswer needs to be customized- lose the prefab bookmarks in the links and add echalk this wiki etc.
Please block Student Profile access to the IE tool to erase cookies, temp files and history.

Passwords
-Both ADMIN and SECRET ADMIN.. PEOPLE KNOW THEM . I THOUGHT ONLY THE DEPOT MANAGERS ARE SUPPOSED TO KOW THE ADMINISTRATOR/NYCDOEADMIN ONE. Please change them both. We still use the OIT administrative password.
-Please set it so the students cannot set a password.
-The problem with the passwords is that there were other programs (my teachers were in one) where teachers were given the ctrl+alt+del 2x ADMINISTRATOR/NYCDOEADMIN password. This is not specific to ITIL . Just change the back door one and leave the rest because they can not mess with the computrace settings unless they have the backdoor one.

DESKTOP and SCREEN SAVER OPTIONS:
-My students are not using the best judgement when it comes to desktop patterns and screen savers. I think it should be completely blocked on the STUDENT user account. The pics are too racy and questionable.
-I disagree. This should be a lesson, conversation and part of the acceptable use policy. Banning them from doing this doesn't help provide students with tools they'll need outside the school. Personalizing is proven to result in less damage to a laptop as well. Let's teach, not ban.
We use the images in the same way- to teach proper usage. How do we know when to review or reteach the lessons? When we start seeing worse pics or more inappropriate screen savers.

From July 2006 Focus Group
Wish List:
  • iChat would be nice to disable the ability to change your profile name. (Students not chatting nicely should be easily found).
  • Mozilla and/or Safari to replace explorer (because of explorer’s vulnerabilities)
  • On PC nothing should be running at start-up
  • Google search (change the preferences to search for only certain images)
  • Unblock sports. NFL is blocked (anything with ball) – self-monitoring, sneak
  • For teachers - Add Apple remote desktop on computer – equivalent on PC. Network administrator.
  • Skype
  • Make control-alt-delete work.
  • Want to have a web based recommendation list
  • Student computer only has the option to start up as a student computer.

To Do:
  • Dashboard – on mac. “People” function allows students to search for teacher’s home addresses easily. This feature needs to be removed.

Problems/concerns:

Is the right software currently on the image?
  • Geometer’s sketchpad is over people’s heads. There is a nice tutorial guide at (http://www.keypress.com/x17670.xml). I used it with great success. Kids enjoy using it.
  • iTunes – students a problem. However it can be an instructional tool.
  • Keynote and powerpoint both on image. Too much room. Others said both serve different important functions.
  • Want to know what literacy programs available in 1:1
*
iTunes is a fantastic app to use to manage podcasts and voice recordings. Saying iTunes is a problem is like saying Word is problem because you can type curse words. Please leave it on the image. Teach appropriate use of iTunes.

Should admin password be given to teacher?
6 no's and 1 yes
Reasons: some teachers give to students, some teachers not tech savvy enough. Allow the natural process within a school determine that those who are tech savvy only receive it.
-It is easy enough to know when to change a teacher's privileges to be able to add softare- that is when the teacher starts to ask the depot manager or tech coach how to do it. Simply change the profile and don't share the passwords for the administrator.

What software would you like to add citywide?
  • Everyone has different needs
  • Approved list of software
    • Leslie has a list (switches – hit the tapping)
